Latest news from the projects...

The Casa of Intiwawa is now up and running! There is electricity and running water in the Intiwawa house. We also just bought some new furniture for the house, so we can work better with the kids.

Every Monday - Thursday Intiwawa runs ‘Tareas’ - an opportunity for the local children to come along to the house, receive help with their homework in a warm and friendly environment, read books and have a hot homemade meal. Our volunteers are able to spend quality time with the children, teaching them valuable life lessons such as teeth cleaning and recycling of waste.

A few weeks ago the kids had two week of school holidays, ‘Vacaciones’, so we altered our usual routine and arranged a variety of activities for the children. Workshops such as painting, theatre, treasure hunts and a mini Olympic Games encouraged the Intiwawa children to work together and to develop existing bonds between themselves and the staff.

This week we held a fundraising-party in one of the local clubs. The fundraising-party ´fiesta de anitifaces´ was a great success. We had about 350 people at the fiesta! Thanks to the collaboration of the party-people and the helping hands of the volunteers we are now able to improve our work and projects with the kids.

Project: English and Computer classes

The beginning of a new school year is as well a new start for a lot of projects. Intiwawa teaches computer and English in different schools. Mid april the English and computer classes started in Corazon de Jesus. This is a primary school of about 100 children in Socabaya, Arequipa, Peru. The kids are between 6 and 12 years old.

As it is the start of a new school year, we will apply a new teaching concept and book. With this new curriculum we hope to assure that the kids learn well. Volunteers from Peru and abroad work together on this project. With the help of the peruvian volunteers we hope that the 'foreign' volunteers will be understood better and that we can create more discipline in the classroom. This will also bring consistancy in the classes.

Intiwawa also has volunteers teach in a small school in San Isidro, classes started end of April.

Come and help teaching English, we are looking for long-term volunteers to teach. Get in contact with our coordinator Jana: jana@intiwawa.com

Intiwawa soccer match (el campeonato)

On sunday, 15th of April, the benefit soccer championship for Intiwawa took place. This has been made possible with the help of organisation 'deportes para desarrollo' -- sports for development. It started at 12pm and ended at 4pm. The weather was beautiful and 16 teams enrolled themselves to play for the victory. It all went really well. The end game was extremely tight, REX vs UNSA.
UNSA ended up wining on penalties!

There were different side activities: sandwiches and T-shirts were being sold and there was a photo exhibition. And proudly the new Intiwawa banner hang for everybody to see.

Thanks to all the helpers and teams who took part!

With the profits we can organise sport activities for the children. They will have their own championship soon.

Letter from current volunteer coordinator Peru NADINE MICHEL

Dear ex-, future and current volunteers and everybody who is interested in Intiwawa and follows what we do,

I think it is time to introduce myself:
I am Nadine the new coordinator of Intiwawa. I started working for Intiwawa in February 2012.
I first got in contact with Intiwawa 2009. Funnily 2 years later "our paths crossed again" and now I am here permanently for a year.
I have had big helpers so far who I herewith want to thank again.

There are big changes coming up for Intiwawa 2012 with the new house for example. With your help I am sure we can make it for the better and best.
The kids and I are always happy to welcome new volunteers on board to help.

Here just a little bit about me:
nationality: german
occupation: event management
lived: in Germany and Australia
worked: as a teachers assistant at a Montessori school in Munich and Brisbane
and in day care for disabled children and after school care

I very much enjoy working with the kids and Intiwawa and am sure we will be having a good year together.

Saludos cordiales de Arequipa.

Nadine

The start of a new school year

Classes in Arequipa are slowly starting up again. After the heavy rainfall schools and families need time to repair the damage.

As the school year starts the Intiwawa 'regular' projects are starting up as well. Last week the volunteers started helping out in the kindergarden or 'jardin'. There is one little kindergarden in San Isidro, there are about 18 children aged between 3 and 6. There is one classroom with one teacher for everyone. Since there is a big difference in the abilities of a 3 year old and a 6 year old we have volunteers to help out. They can focus a bit more on the smaller kids, helping with their school 'tasks', and helping with general tasks like giving food, cleaning up, taking the kids outside to play and so on.

Next week English and computer classes will start. We are waiting for the house to finish before starting up the homework project. This is planned beginning of April. As well other projects like intercultural project will start in April.

Dia del techo casa Intiwawa

What a wonderful day, after only one and a half month it was time to build the roof for the Intiwawa house. In Peru this is traditionally done with the help of everybody involved. Building a roof is a celebration, but also hard work! Volunteers, workers, children, women and men of San Isidro; everybody came together and helped in anyway they could. Carrying water, making cement, preparing food, helping wherever help was needed. After a hard days work the job was done and the roof is a fact.

With the roof on our Intiwawa house we come pretty close to realizing our dreams, soon we can start working at the intiwawa house. A place for the people of San Isidro, a place of solidarity, a place to learn, to come together... to realize dreams.

Congratulation and thanks to everyone involved in this project!

Visit museum and activities in February

To end the vacation school in January the kids went to the museum and to the park on friday morning. The museum 'la recoleta' is one of Arequipa's most divers museums. The museum/convent has 2 precolombian rooms, 2 amazonian rooms,a religious museum with art gallery and library with more than 20.000 books from the 16th century on.

After the museum, the kids and volunteers enjoyed a nice picnic in the park, where they could play some games.

February we have planned divers activities with the kids.
The kids loved the olympic games the volunteers organised:

Agata and Frieder organized a artistic workshop and made mosaics with the kids:

On thursdays the kids of san isidro go to the another school, 'corazon de jesus' , to play on the computers.

At corazon de jesus Intiwawa teaches English the whole year round, as well during vacaciones utiles.
